I started my career as
a Marine Engineer Cadet at South Tyneside College in 1987, sponsored
by The Ben Line Steamers Ltd .
This cadetship covered a four year period following which I worked onboard North Sea Stand-By
Vessels (employed by NOMIS Ltd) for a two year period as Second Engineer.
I moved ashore very early in my career and for the first four years or so I
worked for 'Inverlane Marine Services' of Glasgow where I repaired a variety of marine equipment such as engines , purifiers , compressors
etc. During this time I was able to develop my 'hands on' skills including welding , turning etc.
In 1996 I joined Ferguson Shipbuilders as Assistant Mechanical Design Engineer.
This role later developed into Mechanical Design Engineer and Chief Engineer (Trials). At Ferguson Shipbuilders I was involved with
the design, commissioning and guarantee period of many vessel types including
North Sea Supply Vessels , Research Vessels , Dredgers and Passenger Ferries.
My current role is Classification Surveyor for 'Bureau Veritas' ( French
Classification Society ) . I have been employed by Bureau Veritas (B.V.) for the past six
years. Having qualified to perform Class and Statutory Surveys on many ship types I now generally operate in the Humber Area with additional trips
elsewhere in the UK , overseas and on passage.
