WHAT IS IT?
The Guild of Benevolence is a registered charity (No: 208727) with
the object of granting relief to necessitous and deserving Marine
Engineer Officers and past and present members of the IMarEST , their
dependants and their children.
The Guild originated from the Fund raised to help the families of
the Engineer Officers in the liner Titanic which sank on 15th April
1912, after striking an iceberg in mid-Atlantic. As a consequence,
all the Engineer Officers lost their lives.
In recent years the Guild has been administered by an elected Committee
of twelve voluntary members, who are the Trustees of the Charity.

WHAT DOES IT DO?
Provides various forms of help:
1) Provides financial assistance to persons who qualify under the
Guild Rules, for example:
a) Making regular grants to supplement a very low income. The current
grant is usually £20.00 per week, which is within the limits
of the UK government's charitable disregard and does not affect either
entitlement to state benefits or income tax liabilities.
b) Helping with shortfalls in reasonable nursing home fees.
c) Making single lump sum grants to assist in the purchase of costly
items which are essential for recipients well-being.
d) Assisting with the cost of essential home repairs or decoration.
e) Assisting with essential and reasonable funeral expenses in excess
of any state help.
f) Assisting with financial support of Charitable Education Foundations
for the children of Marine Engineers.
g) Assisting with of respite care.
h) Assisting with debt relief.
2) Possesses a single nomination right to an Anchor Housing Trust
sheltered unit. At present this is in Hull and is taken up by the
mother of a member of the Institute. Those wishing to place their
names on the waiting list for sheltered housing should contact the
Secretary at the address given below. The nomination right exists
for England only.
3) Offers guidance and assistance to those persons who qualify under
the Guild Rules but do not have friends or relations to offer support.
Applicants for grants are sent a financial questionnaire to enquire
into their financial circumstances. The information requested enables
the Guild Committee to assess the application. All information provided
is treated with the strictest confidence. back
